First chance to study this 25+yr movie for a little more contextual filling, missed during my youth. Evidently societal standard of living (thereby common laborers' democracy) is resisted/resented by Hierarchist Economics.
Even though Stone made JFK before this film, I have read that if you watch this before you watch JFK that the continuity of the conspiracies, and the rise, and fall of Nixon makes more sense.
How accurate is this movie for the what ifs? Nixon could have began to subject the beast to public servants thereby a preliminary elimination war against the mob. That mob boss clearly admitted his gang had MLK & JFK murdered, and that Sheriff Bobby Kennedy's murder was scheduled behind the other two for least trouble, especially keeping blacks involved in criminal business base.
Nixon safely answered the mob to expect no retaliation, if only that had been his biggest deceit instead of promise honored. As I remember impeachment process began soon after Nixon complicated the War Machine, and he damn near got biologically assassinated after Vietnam truce, regardless of Congressional hypocrisy.
His only chance would have been to imprison plus kill every mob son-of-a-bitch within USA's reach, which shuts down most small and international Weapons Business. This certainly would make it riskier to hire assassins ducking nervousness. Bobby Kennedy's investigations could then accompany Nixon's G-man tactics for de-corrupting federal, state, & county governments along with international corporations. Nixon & Kennedys were not so great tacticians by allowing lawyers & judges to thwart their resorting with brutal housecleaning.
Mobster infrastructure needed to disappear especially for checkmating organized crime. Racist strifes were necessary for re-organization under THE CRIMINAL-GREEN COLOR SHADE.

Pretty good movie but I feel like Hopkins was not a good choice to play Nixon. They couldn't get a better prosthetic nose? The voice was all wrong too. I felt like he looked and sounded more like Ed Sulllivan.

Anthony Hopkins is truly a brilliant actor and I think this is the only film that he is in where he does not play Anthony Hopkins but portrays an actual character.
